November Project Buff

Introduction & Inspiration

On one of the last days of the year in 2023 we received some devastating news: because of our use of AI in creating our buff design, the November Project leadership team had decided to disqualify us from the competition and go with the second most popular design instead of ours. Fortunately, we ended up being selected as the design for 2025, but it was a long road to get here.

My inspiration to participate in the 2023 November Project buff design challenge stemmed from a shared passion for community fitness with fellow NP member, Naomi Leeds. As someone who has always been fascinated by the intersection of movement and technology–I’m a software engineer and I’m currently building a fitness app called Move Journey (https://site.movejourney.app)–I saw this as an opportunity to blend my technical skills with my love for the NP community. Move Journey is designed to support users in their fitness journeys using AI, from personalized assessments to automated workout tracking and community challenges.

Similar to the spirit of November Project, Move Journey emphasizes community and encourages users to connect and motivate each other. I believe technology, especially AI, can play an effective role in enhancing fitness experiences and fostering a sense of community. This blog post details the design process behind our buff submission, highlighting the AI tools and techniques we employed. I hope our journey inspires you to think about innovative ways technology can support November Project’s mission. Let’s explore the future of fitness and technology together!

Prompting for Design Concepts

With our shared passion for community fitness and a sense of technology-inspired optimism, Naomi and I embarked on brainstorming design concepts. Our initial ideas revolved around themes that resonated with November Project’s core values: community, inclusivity, and year-round commitment to fitness. And maybe a donut and a dog or two. We turned to ChatGPT to expand our brainstorming and refine our concepts.

One of our early prompts focused on generating graphical buff design ideas that incorporated the November Project logo and reflected its 12-year history.

Suggest 10 graphical buff design ideas for the 2023 November Project Buff Design Competition. Include a variety of approaches and concepts for the designs. Each design must incorporate the November Project logo. This is the 12th year of November Project. See https://november-project.com/the-10th-anniversary-buff-design-contest/ for some previous designs. Some of my design ideas to get you started:

  • Dogs of NP
  • Dogification of everything NP
  • 12 months, November through October
  • High fives collage

For each design, describe the design and explain the concept behind it.

ChatGPT gave us ten design ideas, from “Anniversary Flames” symbolizing the community’s energy to “Dog Stars of NP” celebrating the NP’s dog-loving culture. None of them led directly to a design that we used, but they certainly helped move the creative process forward. Indeed, it was when I was trying to get a specific, consistent art style to use for some doodles that I came up with a separate new concept for a buff design: the idea of a November Project Rube Goldberg Machine.

NP Rube Goldberg Machines

While exploring these initial concepts, we were particularly drawn to the idea of a “November Project Rube Goldberg Machine.” This whimsical concept embodied the playful spirit of NP and offered a unique way to visualize the chain reactions of motivation and support that drive the community. We experimented with AI prompts to generate intricate line art illustrations of these machines, incorporating elements that represented the November Project’s year-round activities and diverse community.

Some of the more interesting images came from unintentionally creating scenes which were not machines at all.

We took two of our favorite machine illustrations, made various manual edits, and put these together with the NP logo for a design that we really liked.

Naomi actually surprised me by having some custom buffs made for the two of us with this design.

We got this design ready to submit, but we also decided to prepare an alternate design. This turned out to be a fortunate choice.

Crowd Sourced Doodles

We briefly considered crowdsourcing doodles from the NP community to capture the diverse artistic expressions of its members. However, due to time constraints and logistical challenges, we decided to continue exploring AI-generated designs.

Refinement and Iteration

We began refining some alternative designs, focusing on the “12 Months” concept. To achieve a consistent art style, we experimented with different AI prompts and image generation techniques. We also created a shared document to collaborate on refining the selected images and ensure alignment in our creative vision.

We went through many iterations and started to get a feel for how we wanted the design to look and what approaches might work for prompting.

Seasons Prompts and Selected Images

To capture the essence of November Project’s year-round activities, we crafted separate prompts for each season. These prompts incorporated specific NP symbols, activities, and phrases (pulled from our list of 157 items), resulting in a diverse collection of doodles that represented the community’s spirit throughout the year. We carefully selected our favorite images from each season to assemble the final buff design.

Meta-prompt for the per-season prompts:

Prompt for 4 images, each with a cartoonish style monochrome line art design. Each canvas features evenly spaced and similar-sized icons and symbols, with 7 items across each row. Create a series of prompts for 4 separate images, each prompt associated with one season of the year, and each depicting a set of 7 items customized for the specific season, with multiple variations of those 7 items in rows down the canvas. Choose items related to the outdoor community fitness group November Project such as shoes, dogs, water bottles, spray paint, t-shirts, funny hats, sweat bands, hills, stairs, trails, side walks, a boy doing push ups, a woman performing squats, a girl jumping, high-fives, hugs, coffee, donuts, medals, costumes, canoe paddles, a cow bell, puppies, stroller, wheel chair, stadium, flags, socks, a maple leaf, hiking boots, a band aid, a cat, a cartwheel, an alarm clock, an umbrella, sunglasses, a wig, a dinosaur mask, winter gloves, a snowman, and other symbols related to November Project. For one of the items, pick one of these phrases as speech bubbles, doodles, or signs: “weather proof”, “heck yeah”, “what time is it?”, “game time”, “let’s get a little bounce”, “race everything”, “just show up”, “rise and grind”, “you’ve got this”, and “stronger every day”.

Layout and Design Challenges

The layout process involved arranging the selected doodles in a visually appealing and cohesive manner. We experimented with different compositions, aiming for an organic layout that reflected the dynamic energy of November Project. We encountered challenges in maintaining a consistent art style and ensuring that all the elements were clear and recognizable.

Submission

At this point, after several days of rushed iterations, we had something ready to submit. We knew the design had a lot of imperfections, but we were happy to have something to contribute. Little did we know that at this point we were really just at the beginning of the process. In mid December 2023, Rob McDougall contacted us to let us know that our 12 Months design had been voted the most popular of the submissions by the November Project co-leaders from around the world. I explained that we had a laundry list of minor tweaks that we thought could make the design even better, and asked if he would be open to accepting some refinements.

Editing and Further Refinements

To address some of the omissions, redundancies, and other opportunities for improvement from the version of the design we had submitted we began a process of meticulously replacing select elements in the design. We generated additional images and selectively extracted individual doodles to replace or improve specific elements. We also focused on refining the overall composition and ensuring that the final design was visually balanced and impactful. I was enthusiastic about spending a significant portion of my holiday break making improvements to a design that would be worn by hundreds of fellow NP participants.

In several cases, we had some very specific ideas that we wanted to include in the design. For example, we knew we wanted a mother with a baby to represent the many strong mothers of NP. We tried again and again to get a suitable image.

Some had no baby. Several had the wrong art style, or too much detail. Eventually we landed on something we could use, and with a bit of editing the woman in this image got incorporated into the final design.

Did we include elements of November Project in our design that resonate with you? What would you have included that we missed?

AI Controversy

After another week of intense work, late nights, and countless AI prompts, we finally had a design we were proud of. We arrived at a design with dozens of improvements over what we had submitted initially. The design incorporated a vast array of representative symbols from our “12 Months” concept, resulting in a unique representation of November Project’s spirit, community, and year-round activities.

But then we got the big news: in light of the fact that we had used AI to help generate our design, the NP leadership team decided it would be unfair to the other participants in the design competition to allow our entry to be accepted. This was a huge disappointment, especially after putting in the extra hours to refine the design and after sharing with friends and family our excitement about having been selected. Knowing that the design might still have a future helped take away some of the sting, and fortunately our effort wasn’t wasted.

Final Design and Reflection

Fast forward to November 2024. Rob contacted us again and let us know that November Project was using our design for a customer merch fundraiser. With a few additional refinements (including inverting the colors), a version of our design was used to create some custom shirts and other gear.

The design was also selected for the buffs for 2025. We went with the white on black color scheme and added some pops of yellow to avoid repeating the “black on white” scheme used by Camille Le Gall in her city skylines design for the 2024 buff.

The Role of AI and Technology in Design

While AI played a significant role in our design process, it’s essential to acknowledge both the benefits and potential drawbacks of using AI in creative endeavors. As a software engineer, I’m excited about the potential of AI to enhance creativity and accessibility in design. However, it’s important to be mindful of the ethical considerations surrounding AI, including issues of bias, accessibility, and environmental impact. This raises the question: Does the value of unlocking creative use cases like this justify the costs?

Conclusion

Our journey through the November Project buff design challenge was a testament to the power of community, creativity, and technology. By leveraging AI tools and embracing a collaborative spirit, we were able to create a design that captured the essence of November Project. We hope this blog post has inspired you to explore the potential of AI in your own creative pursuits and to continue supporting the November Project’s mission.
